For Immediate Release Sod Poodles Contact: Zach Robbins, ZachR@sodpoodles.com AMARILLO, TX (May 8, 2025) – The Amarillo Sod Poodles today announced that postponed STEAM Day activities will be made up on Tuesday, May 20 during an exhibition baseball game between teams in the Pecos League, an independent professional baseball league in the southwest United States. In an effort to revive the previously scheduled events, HODGETOWN will play host to create an immersive and engaging atmosphere for all Panhandle students to enjoy.

With STEAM Day previously scheduled for Tuesday, May 6th for the Sod Poodles series opener against Tulsa, the game and all planned activities were postponed due to inclement weather in the area. In collaboration with the Pecos League, all festivities originally planned for the Tuesday matinee will be rescheduled Tuesday, May 20 to act as a make-up for the shelved event. All schools originally scheduled to attend the postponed event are invited back to take part in the Sod Poodles experience and all STEAM Day programs.

“We are thrilled to have figured out a way to reintroduce STEAM Day and couldn’t be happier to host Pecos League baseball at HODGETOWN,” said Sod Poodles President and General Manager, Tony Ensor. “It was a shame that we had to postpone our STEAM Day activities, so finding an alternate solution to serve young baseball fans in Amarillo was certainly something we wanted to consider carefully. With the help of our friends at the Pecos League, we’re ecstatic that we could pivot to put on this event in this manner.” The Pecos League is an independent baseball league that was originally formed in 2011. All clubs operate in cities that do not have Major or Minor League Baseball teams in the area in which they play. Spread out across the desert mountain region in the American southwest, teams hail from California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. Players come not just from the United States, but all over the world as the league is comprised of rising stars, falling stars, and athletes with stars in their eyes. Several players have made appearances in Major League Baseball, including Jared Koenig, Jon Edwards, Eric Yardley, Logan Gillaspie, Yermin Mercedes, and Chris Smith.

“It is an absolute privilege to be able to have some of our clubs represent our league at one of the finest ballparks in Minor League Baseball,” said Pecos League Commissioner, Andrew Dunn. “This is a great opportunity for some hidden talent to show what they’re made of in front of the Amarillo faithful and we can’t wait to share some of our history with baseball fans in the Panhandle.”

The teams representing the Pecos League at HODGETOWN for the Tuesday morning contest will be the Pecos Bills and the Roswell Invaders. They are set to participate in the pre-season matchup with an 11:05 p.m. first pitch on May 20. It will be the sixth time in Pecos League history a game has been played in Amarillo.

For groups and suite holders who originally had tickets for the May 6 contest that was postponed, they will have their tickets and passes reissued for this select event. For more info on ticketing for the Bill vs. Invaders exhibition matchup, please call the Sod Poodles Box Office at (806) 803-9547.

Kevin Reilly saves the ship in Vallejo

Former Vallejo Admirals Owner Kevin

Former Vallejo Admirals Owner Kevin Reilly spent an entire week reviewing and negotiating a way to keep baseball in Wilson Park. Kevin and Visit Vallejo"s Mark Walter made it top priority to come up with a deal and then negotiate a deal with GVRD to keep the Pecos League and Seaweed in Vallejo for 10 games for the 2025 season. "My idea was to at least keep some games in Vallejo for this year and have a full schedule in 2026. If the team completely leaves they would have likely never came back. This wasn"t exactly easy and there was some confusion but we got the deal done. "

Bobby Vito Game Day Director of the Vallejo Seaweed "Why did it have to get to this point? What are we really doing here. We need the Seaweed and we are coming off a great season with some of the best fans in the league. Why would there even be discussions of the Seaweed not returning. It was extremely hard starting from scratch in 2023. Having the ten games is a savior. We have some really great people that support this program and enjoy coming, I can"t wait to work the season again."

Christian Carmouche says "We will play where the schedule tells us to play, if it says play on the moon we will goto the moon, if it says Santa Rosa then it is Santa Rosa. I like that we get 10 games in Wilson Park"

Andrew Dunn of the Pecos League "When was announced we were not going to be able to play in Vallejo in April, we were told this can"t happen and we must resolve this. The Mayor, Fans, Community Leaders, Fans, and the City of Vallejo leaders all reached out to say we want the Seaweed here. The biggest misconception is The City of Vallejo does not own the field or have any control of it, it is ran by GVRD which is special parks district. Kevin Reilly called and said don"t leave Vallejo, I will get this figured out one way or another. We can"t lose the team.

I can assure you this, Without Kevin and Mark there would be no Pecos League Baseball in Wilson Park in 2025. We are excited to play 10 games in Vallejo. We will play 10 games under our existing contract that was already in place for 2025 season."

Scuba Divers emerge from the water for the 2025 season

The Santa Rosa Scuba Divers are coming out of the water in time for the 2025 season. The Pecos League will play in Doyle Park under the five year agreement that is still active that was signed in 2022. The Scuba Divers are replacing the Vallejo Seaweed in the 16 team Pecos Baseball League. The Divers will inherit a very strong coaching staff and roster that qualified for the Pecos League Playoffs and narrowly lost to Bakersfield in the first round of the Pacific Division Playoffs.

In 2022 the Scuba Divers were founded and they qualified for the Pacific Division playoffs in their only year in the league. The Scuba Divers didn"t return in 2023 due to logistical issues with Doyle Park. These issues have been resolved.

The Divers have been underwater for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. 2025 marks the perfect time to come out of the water.

The Scuba Divers are excited to continue to build fan base and bring a good level of baseball to Sonoma County in the Pecos League. In doing so allowing others in community to be involved with the team.

The Scuba Divers will be part of a process to restore and refurbish the playing surface and amenities at Doyle Park for all user groups.

Why is it named Doyle Park?
Frank Doyle (1863–1948) and his father Manville Doyle formed the Exchange Bank of Santa Rosa in 1890. Frank purchased the land for Doyle Community Park as a memorial for his 13-year-old son who died during tonsillectomy surgery in 1921. Frank encouraged improvement of local transportation, including building the Golden Gate Bridge. While touring the bridge construction site two months before the opening, Frank rode in the first private automobile across the bridge, and was designated "Father of the Golden Gate." When Frank died, 50.4% of the Exchange Bank common stock was put into a perpetual trust as the Frank P. Doyle and Polly O’Meara Doyle Scholarship Fund. Since 1948, this scholarship fund has provided over $90 million to more than 135,000 Sonoma County students attending Santa Rosa Junior College. The fund also provides $2,000 annually for maintenance of Doyle Community Park.
