As the Pecos League prepares for its third season and looks to expand from a 6 to 8 team league, it is important to examine why Alamogordo is the perfect model town to host a franchise and set up to be the best city in the league for years to come.
Every town will pitch itself as the best. Sure Las Cruces has the size that Alamogordo will never attain. Roswell and Santa Fe can boast their tourism. Alpine has their historic stadium at Kokernot Field, but Alamogordo brings so many other intangibles to the region that no other towns can claim.
One only needs to attend an Alamogordo Tigers High School football game or the little league baseball games to see the communities insatiable support for local sports. There is no competition, so it is virtually an untapped market. With no nightlife, other than a single cineplex or cruising Sonic, evening baseball throughout the summer is a perfect alternative.
Not only is Alamogordo a retirement community with people with spare time on their hands and a few extra entertainment dollars to spend, it is also the home of Holloman Air Force Base and the German Air Force. Professional sports entertainment is now available to all age groups, and different cultures as well. These markets have barely been tapped and the possibility for growth and increased interest is endless.
Alamogordo also has a centralized location which is not only convenient for the league, but for the players, visiting fans and family, other league officials as well. It is in close proximity to major transportation with El Paso international airport less than an hour and a half down the road. Only Las Cruces is closer to a major airport.
Finally it�s the people. Alamogordo has already established a loyal fanbase that has proven it will support its team, win or lose. The City officials and workers are second to none. The mayor is seen at the field on a regular basis, supporting the team. The fans enjoy the inexpensive beer and best margaritas the Tularosa Basin has to offer and never has there been a brawl or incident due to alcohol sales. The police department is no longer needed to patrol and security isn�t even required. The best part is seeing folks fom the ages 4-84 out at the park simply enjoying Americas pastime.
For all these reasons, Alamogordo is, and will remain the best town in the Pecos League.
