11/15/2011-Santa Fe city manager Robert Romero is in process of changing the name of the Santa Fe Mountain Lions. Some of the names being considered are Friars, Mustangs, Feos, Turkey Vultures, Crow, Arroyos, Summit, tumble weeds, woodpeckers, Sky, Spaniards, and of course Conquistadors. Every city that has a Pecos League team always suggests Conquistadors.
The Pecos League attempted to name the team the Zozobras but the Lions Club claimed that they own the noun. And unlike everyone in Santa Fe the Pecos League decided to go along and not be controversial. Mountain Lions is also a natural fit, Santa Fe County has had a rash of Mountain Lion attacks and it doesn't hurt that the Pecos League still had Mountain Lions gear from the 2010 Continental League Desert Valley Mountain Lions.
The excitement and request for a name/color change was sparked with the Florida Marlins dropped teal and went with their new modern colors.
The White Sands Pupfish will not change their name. The proposed name change of Alamogordo F16's and Alamogordo Spacemen will not take place. The White Sands Pupfish had a great first year and will grew off of their first year. There was some confusion over both the White Sands and the Pupfish part of their name. White Sands is a tiny military town in between Las Cruces and Alamogordo. Practically no one knows what a Pupfish is either. Some key fans wanted Alamogordo in the name of the team because alot of people do not realize White Sands is in Alamogordo. "We are keeping the name, colors and identity of the Pupfish. Couldn't ask for better first year. If you look at other Independent League Teams across the US there are alot of abstract names." says Andrew Dunn owner of the Pupfish.
