8/1/2013-Pecos League settles numbers off the field.
The 2013 season is complete. Below is the report of the 2013 Pecos League Teams.
1. Roswell Invaders-The Roswell Invaders returned to the model franchise in 2013 that they were in 2011. The Invaders ran the table in the Pecos League winning the title was just the beginning. The City of Roswell met all of the Invaders needs and helped run the Pecos League's best team. The team lead the league in Merchandise Sales for the 3rd year in a row. The Invaders met community expectations with their new coaching staff. The Invaders new coaching staff turned the team around overnight. The Invaders set a Pecos League Record for regular season wins. The Invaders even have their own section in the famed UFO Museum. Roswell finally got local newspaper coverage and has full buy in from all members across community. The Invaders Fans are already looking forward to 2014.
2. Trinidad Triggers-The Triggers had a great second year. This year will always be remembered as the year of the Reality TV Show. The TV Show followed the Triggers everywhere. Similar to Alpine the Triggers sold their own concessions. When the show airs it will make or break the Triggers and the City of Trinidad. The Triggers had the best off the field operation in the Pecos League with Kim Schultz at the helm. JD Droddy improved relations with TSJC and Central Park. The Triggers have made the playoffs both years the four seed. Trinidad has become a stable city in the Pecos League where players want to play. This despite all of the unstable moves in the off season between the Triggers, the City and TSJC. The Triggers have paved the way for the Pecos League in Colorado.
3. Raton Osos-The Raton Osos were the biggest surprise in the Pecos League. Despite having one of the worst teams in Pecos League history on the field the community embraced the Osos. The Million Dollar Gabriele Field served its purpose as on of the Pecos Leagues best places to watch a game. Jared Chatterley was the key local leader who kept everything in order in Raton. Raton set the model for small town baseball. The Osos provided a huge spark to Raton's summer economy by providing road team housing for both Trinidad and Raton at the famous Village Inn. Raton's ballpark played great and in 2014 the Osos look forward to launching their beer garden. Raton's operation ran very smoothly for a Pecos League Expansion Team. In 2014 Raton has a goal for getting to the .500 mark.
4. Alpine Cowboys-The Alpine Cowboys had another solid year in the Pecos League. For the third year in a row the Cowboys made the playoffs. Expectations are high in the West Texas Town of Alpine. The Cowboys took a major step forward taking over their own concessions. In 2014 the Cowboys will look forward to another Southern Division to balance their scheduling.
5. Santa Fe Fuego-The Fuego had a solid 2nd year. Despite slow early crowds, the Fuego fans really picked up as the Fuego made their playoff push. Their biggest crowd was the All-Star Game and the crowds were solid in June and July. With Taos not having home games the Fuego had too many early home games in a row. In 2014 a balanced schedule will help the Fuego. The Beer Garden will be removed in 2014 as well. The die hard baseball fans want a winner in Santa Fe. They have played two years with a trip to the playoffs. The City of Santa Fe installed a beautiful scoreboard and PA System. There are rumors that they will somehow extend the right field fence into the ravine. Regardless Santa Fe is a great Pecos League City with great fans, a great newspaper and a beautiful ballpark.
6. White Sands Pupfish-The Pupfish moved forward in 2013 installing misters and having the best playing surface in the league. The Pupfish had another disapointing year on the field. A failed attempt with a player/manager and older players never let the Pupfish even consider playoffs. Fans are seeking a team that is younger and can get into the playoffs. The Fish lost so many games early they were out of the race. Roswell completely dominated the Pupfish winning 14 of 16 games against the Pupfish, this caused many Pupfish Fans to wear Navy and Lime. The team didn't qualify for the playoffs again and the Pupfish really miss their local rivals in Ruidoso and Las Cruces. In 2014 the Pupfish would benefit from having another Southern Division Team. They were front loaded with home games in the month of May. A balanced schedule would be appreciated. The season was still a good one in Alamogordo. The Air Force Base had several great nights and with a team that can be .500 in 2014 the Fish will fill the stands. Griggs Park was probably the best playing surface in the league. The Fish will be fighting uphill being in a three team division with Alpine and Roswell.
7. Las Vegas Train Robbers-In the short history of the Pecos League, Las Vegas was by far the most challenging location of all of the cities. Las Vegas New Mexico population 12,000 got overloaded with baseball players in the summer of 2013. There were as many as 75 players living in Las Vegas at once. Las Vegas had both the Taos Blizzard and Las Vegas Train Robbers as full time residents. The City of Las Vegas was dealt with a lot of challenges. The Train Robbers made it all the way to end losing the championship series to Roswell.
It was a rough go for the Train Robber players to say the least.
In the beginning of the season the playing surface was deemed unplayable. Grass clumps in the outfield made the surface unsafe for players. Host Families were a huge problem as well. Unlike Raton, the Team didn't generate close to enough revenue to run a team properly. This caused a whirlwind of problems for the players. Las Vegas was dead last in attendence but the Train Robbers won the division and was hosted the first round of the playoffs. Monsoon rains swept Northern New Mexico flooding their field. The City and New Mexico Highlands stepped up again allowing the Train Robbers to play their series at New Mexico Highlands University. The City of Las Vegas met everything that was asked of them and helped in any way they could but it was a huge learning experience. Las Vegas will alot of adjustments to their budget and operation to have a successful team in 2014.
8. Taos Blizzard-The Taos Blizzard played daytime baseball in 2013. There is a bond to pass lights that would allow for games to be played at night. Daytime baseball won't work in Taos and there will not be a team if there aren't lights. The fans that did attend the games love the Pecos League and love the idea of actually having their own team not a travel team. The players that played for Taos had a tough travel schedule to say the least and they were forced to live in Las Vegas New Mexico. They played four series and Alpine. The local residents are thrilled with the Blizzard as long as there are lights. The Taos Tundra baseball field is by far the worse surface in the Pecos League and it is not even close.
