6/3/2023-The Alpine Cowboys took on the Austin Weirdos in their first home game of the 2023 season. The
Cowboys started the scoring early in the 2nd inning when Matt Wheeler brought in Manny Garcia with
the first hit of his professional career. Alex Canty then came in to score on a Matt Hess sacrifice
fly to give the Cowboys a 2-0 lead. Two more runs came in when Alex Canty knocked in James Prockish
and Josh Rego with a single. Garcia then came in to score later in the inning when Drew Bayard
walked. The Cowboys continued to add runs to their total over the next two innings, including a solo
home run from Josh Rego and an RBI single from Manny Garcia. The Cowboys got out to a 10-0 lead
before the Weirdos finally broke through in the 7th. Although the Weirdos attempted to fight back,
the Cowboys shut them down thanks to appearances from Jesse Garcia, Spencer Persky, and Mike
Castillo. The Cowboys ended up taking a 10-1 victory over the Weirdos, evening out their record at
2-2. The Austin Weirdos record drops down to 0-4.
Matt Hess got the win for the Cowboys, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out a team-high
11. Austin starting pitcher Monty Maley took the loss tonight, lasting five innings and allowing 10
earned runs. Matthew Wheeler stood out at the plate for the Cowboys, going 3-5 in his professional
debut with 3 singles and RBI. Manny Garcia also had a good night at the plate, going 3-5 with three
singles, while reaching base in all 5 plate appearances and scoring three times.
The Cowboys and Weirdos will finish their two-game series on June 4th, with first pitch slated for 6
pm.
