July 8 2011 The Alpine Cowboys overcame a late deficit to defeat the White Sands Pupfish 13-12 in a high-scoring game. Alpine collected 12 hits and scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the victory, while White Sands finished with 14 hits.
Alpine built an early 7-5 lead by scoring three runs in the first inning and four in the second. White Sands answered with two runs in the third to tie the game, then added two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 12-9 advantage. Alpine scored twice in the seventh before its four-run ninth-inning rally turned the game in its favor.
Ernie Munoz led White Sands with five hits, three runs and four RBI in six at-bats.
Tim Rotola scored three runs and reached base three times, while
Chris Nyman had two hits and an RBI. For Alpine,
Austin Newell went 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and a home run.
Kyle Wells scored three runs and added an RBI, and
David Valesente drove in three runs.
Yasel Gutierrez and
Anderson Gardner each contributed two RBI.
Stephen Szkotak earned the win for Alpine after throwing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no hits allowed.
Parker Talbert started for the Cowboys and allowed five runs in 1.1 innings, while Greg Denton surrendered four runs in three innings. White Sands starter
Paul Jinkens worked seven innings, allowing eight hits and nine runs, six earned, with seven walks and one strikeout.
Adam Osteen took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.
