June 16 2024 The Vallejo Seaweed defeated the Martinez Sturgeon 12-11 in a high-scoring game at Waterfront Park. Vallejo collected 12 hits and committed no errors while Martinez finished with 17 hits and three errors.
Henry Paulino powered the Seaweed offense with three hits, including two home runs, three runs and eight RBI.
Eddie Molina added two hits and three RBI, while
Mickey Nunes scored twice and stole three bases. Martinez was led by
Jesue Rivera, who went 4-for-5 with two RBI, and
Andrew Curran and
Austin Micheli, who each recorded three hits.
Tony Riley and
Caleb Natov homered and drove in three runs apiece for the Sturgeon.
Vallejo broke through for four runs in the second inning, then added three runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the eighth. Martinez answered with four runs in the third and four more in the sixth to take an 11-10 lead, but the Seaweeds two-run eighth put Vallejo ahead for good as both teams were held scoreless in the ninth.
Antonio Straughter earned the win after allowing two hits and no runs over three innings while striking out four.
Christian Zellner started for Vallejo and surrendered 10 runs on 13 hits in five innings. Martinez starter
Erik Estrada allowed seven runs on nine hits in five innings, and
Lane Vrba took the loss after giving up two runs in one inning.
